Hanukkah begins at sundown tonight - Wednesday, November 27.  As the menorah is lit by the shamash, it reminds us of the miracle of the Hanukkah lights when only a day’s worth of oil burned for 8 days after the Maccabees reclaimed the holy Temple.

On the first night of Hanukkah, 3 blessings are recited. On subsequent nights, only 2 are recited. This is the third blessing, the Shehecheyanu - it is an important blessing that thanks God for sustaining us and reminds us to appreciate the goodness in our lives.

Blessed are You, Lord our God, Ruler of the universe, who has kept us alive and has preserved us, and enabled us to reach this time.
